This project aims to integrate the "desktop grid" of volunteer computers with the EGEE, the largest European network of formal "service grids" -- centrally maintained, high-end computing resources owned and administered by governments, universities, and big companies.

Each grid type has its advantages: Service grids, with more powerful machines and homogenous devices, are somewhat more flexible and can accommodate a broader variety of applications; desktop grids, however, are able to harness 1 to 2 orders of magnitude more computing power at a fraction of the cost (primarily due to the large numbers of desktop computers). Making a bridge between the two will represent a major step towards a European-wide scientific grid, allowing researchers to deploy unprecedented resources in support of projects -- such as research into nuclear fusion -- with large potential benefit for society as a whole. A list of applications which might be running at any given time is posted here.
